Researchers recently found that whales use particle motion as well as pressure waves during their elaborate songs. Particle motion helps the songs travel further in the ocean than scientists had previously known. Particle motion has only been recently discovered because it requires more complex technology to be detected than pressure waves. The anatomy of the whale ear bone helps them pick up the low frequency vibrations and could be important in detecting the location of other whales. This is especially important now because the vibrations caused by human activity in the ocean may affect whales even more than previously thought.
